Fragile X Syndrome: The Most Common Form of Inherited Mental Illness
  • 12 years ago
Fragile X Syndrome and Fragile X Associated Disorders

are a family of inherited conditions caused by changes in the FMR1 gene. There are three distinct Fragile X-associated disorders.
FXS is the most common inherited cause of intellectual disabilities. It occurs in both males and females, though females generally have less severe symptoms. It can cause developmental and language delays, learning impairment, and behavioral and mental health issues.
The condition affects 1 in 2500 to 1 in 4000 males and 1 in 7000 to 8000 females. Lifespan is generally unaffected by the disorder. It affects all racial and ethnic groups and is present from birth.
The disease also known as Bell Martin syndrome is the most common cause of inherited mental retardation, and the second most genetically associated mental deficiency.
There are Two Other Known Fragile X Syndrome Associated Disorders
These disorders are caused by permutations, or less than a full mutation, of the FMR1 gene.
