The National Fair of Traditional Jewelry wrapped up in Algiers on Wednesday, as some 60 craftsmen from various part of Algeria exchanged their experiences and knowledge.
Among the blazing jewelry, there are pieces from the Kabylie region--all of them are made of pure silver. They are decorated by the three symbolic colours, namely: yellow, symbolizing the sun, clear blue, symbolizing the sky and sea, and green, symbolizing the grassland and forests of the Kabylie region.
Z. Assous comes from Tizi Ouzou province, a best known capital of traditional jewelry making. She told CNC how she inherited the skills from her father generations.
SOUNDBITE(algerian): Z. ASSOUS, Jewelry craftswoman
"My late grandfather was the first to do this handcraft in 1949. He went to Beni Yeni to buy a silver pin, and the old man who sold him the pin decided to teach him this craft. My grandfather passed on it to my father, and my father imparted it to us. And now, the government is helping us promoting it."
