US gay couples continue to face challenges

Supporters of same-sex marriage in the United States are celebrating their latest triumphs, after the state of Washington and the District of Columbia both passed legislation legalising it.

Washington became the seventh state to do so. Gay marriage, however, is still a long way from becoming the law of the land.
