Taliban to open Qatar office for peace talks with US

The Taliban has confirmed it has come to an "initial agreement" to open a political office overseas as part of peace talks with the US.

The US government said it would welcome the move if the group renounces violence.

After more than 10 years of fighting in Afghanistan, the Taliban's announcement is the first public gesture towards negotiations with the US.
