The Italian prime minister, Mario Monti, says his country has pulled back from the brink of a catastrophe on the scale of Greece.

He said he was encouraged by news that the country's borrowing costs have fallen for a second successive day but he added that much more still needs to be done, promising a "Grow Italy" package in the new year.

Al Jazeera's Simon McGregor-Wood reports.
