The first group of about Arab League 30 monitors is expected to arrive in Syria "within hours", amid fresh claims of deaths as part of an ongoing security crackdown on a pro-democracy uprising.

Some of the fiercest fighting has been taking place in the neighbourhood of Baba Amr, which is believed to be a stronghold of army defectors.

The opposition said that the Syrian army has been shelling residential areas in what has been described as the latest assault to crush resistance in this rebellious region.
