Russia's Republic of Dagestan is part of the North Caucasus mountain range. Several dozen ethnic groups live here. Dagestan has some oil deposits and major industries such as textile manufacturing and food processing, but life high up in the mountains here is different. The village of Tsovkra is 3,000 meters above sea level. It's hard even to grow vegetables, let alone carry out any other normal activities -- but it was here that the art of tightrope walking was born.
