Panamanian authorities burned over nine tons of drugs seized in police operations over the last several months.

Police say the drugs were mostly cocaine, but included some marijuana and some heroin.

Police say the narcotics included shipments moving through Panama on their way to other destinations, as well as drugs meant for local consumption in Panama.

Drug trafficking has become common along Panama's humid, inhospitable border with Colombia, which is patrolled by just a few thousand officers.

According to Panamanian authorities, over 16 tons of various narcotics have been seized so far in 2012.
