The South African government is set to test thousands of miners for tuberculosis over the next year, as the number of people getting sick is increasing at an alarming rate.

Gold mining is of particular concern because it has been linked to silicosis, an incurable lung disease that increases vulnerability to TB.

There are also more people living with HIV in South Africa than anywhere else in the world, more than five million, putting even more strain on an already struggling public health sector.
