The President of the Abkhazian Republic has died. Sergey Bagapsh, who was 62, passed away early on Sunday morning in a Moscow hospital. He underwent a complex surgery to treat lung cancer, but suffered complications. Bagapsh had led the country towards independence from neighbouring Georgia, which it achieved following a war in 2008. The Abkhazian vice-president will take over in an acting role for the next three months.
