Sleep Position May Impact Erotic Dream Frequency - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.
What position do you sleep in? A new study shows that how you sleep can affect the kinds of dreams you have. For example, people who slept on their stomach had more dreams related to sex or persecution than people who slept on their back or on their side. Lead author of the study Calvin Kai-Ching Yu says that the restriction of airways or some outside stimulus may be causing the sexy dreams. The study was done by Shue Yan University in Hong Kong, by interviewing 670 University students, two thirds of whom were female. The subjects were asked to fill out questions about the frequency of their dreams and the positions that they slept in. Researchers claim that “this study provides the evidence that dream experiences, and in particular dream content, can be influenced by body posture during sleep.” The most commonly reported dream that happened with subjects who slept on their stomach was "erotomania" which happens when the subject thinks that they have a secret sexual admirer who is often a famous person.
Scientists have been studying dreams and sleep for quite a while, including the first study of Rapid Eye Movement or REM sleep, published in 1953.
