Kurds clash with Turkish police early on Tuesday here in the southeastern province of Hakkari.

The violence comes 28 years to the day since the Kurdistan Workers Party - or PKK - began its armed insurgency against the Turkish state.

Around 150 protesters hurl stones and petrol bombs at security forces, who respond with smoke grenades and water cannon.

Clashes between security forces and the outlawed PKK have risen sharply in recent weeks.

Over the years, one of the world's most protracted insurgencies has left more than 40,000 people dead - most of them Kurds.

The PKK says it is fighting for greater political and cultural rights for Turkey's estimated 15 million ethnic Kurds, scaling back earlier demands for an independent state.
