Rebels deny reports that they have lost control in Aleppo.

They continue to take up arms in the face of overwhelming force from government fire in the Salaheddine district.

With ammunition running out they they have pulled back in certain areas.

Streets in the center of Salaheddine have been abandoned.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) UNIDENTIFIED RESIDENT, SAYING:

"Everything fell on our heads. I came to check to see if my house was destroyed. No more than that. I hope that everything will calm down and that everything will go back to normal and that the country will get back to normal."

With so much blood already spilt since the uprising began last march, streets have turned into an urban wasteland.

Syrian State TV says the government has retaken Aleppo but rebels have not given up the fight. They continue to pay the price for a battle with no end in sight.
