The politically-sensitive trial of Gu Kailai, wife of ousted Politburo member Bo Xilai, led Chinese state television's afternoon bulletin on Thursday (August 9).

Television pictures showed two police officers leading Gu into a packed court room.

Gu and her co-accused Zhang were charged with poisoning Briton Neil Heywood, a family friend, last year.

State television read out the official Xinhua news agency's report, saying Gu believed Heywood would threaten the personal safety of her son.

The three-minute long state television report showed 140 people, including at least two foreigners, watching the trial.

The hearing ended in just about seven hours and a verdict will be delivered at a later date.

Gu's trial is seen by many Chinese as part of a push against Bo, an ambitious populist who made powerful enemies as he campaigned to join the next generation of top central leaders.
