Egypt hunts militants in Sinai
Egyptian army tanks advance through the desert in the Sinai Peninsula.

They're hunting for militants, following deadly overnight clashes between security forces and insurgents.

The militants were blamed for an attack on Sunday that killed 16 soldiers.

Overnight, automatic gunfire rang out as fighting raged.

The violent clashes were reportedly followed by a series of air strikes on targets surrounding the town of Sheikh Zuwaid, 10 kilometres from the Gaza Strip, that killed 20.

Sunday's attack was the bloodiest assault on security forces in Sinai since Egypt signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979.

The attackers also stormed through the border into Israel but were killed by Israeli gunfire.
