North Korean leader greets Chinese official

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un told a visiting Chinese official that his government is focused on "developing the economy and improving people's livelihoods," China's state media reported late on Thursday (August 2).
Kim's comments to Wang Jiarui, head of the International Department of the Chinese Communist Party, were the latest sign that the young leader aims to tackle North Korea's decaying economy, which has been poorly managed under the military-first government system.
This is in contrast to Kim's late father who allowed the military a key role in running North Korea, now struggling with chronic poverty, isolation and damaging floods that could worsen the situation.
Kim told Wang that the Korean Worker's Party is "struggling towards" giving the Korean people "happy and civilised lives", China's official Xinhua news agency said.
Kim's comments in a meeting in Pyongyang broke no new policy ground, but analysts and diplomatic sources in China and South Korea expect Kim to embark on an economic reform package soon.
Wang and Kim also spoke about "deepening the traditional friendship" between the two countries, Xinhua said.
