Fugees_-_Ready_Or_Not

Alors que Lauryn s'est déjà faite remarquer, entre autre dans le film Sister Act 2 (1993), le trio a sorti son premier LP, Blunted on Reality, suite à leur premier EP du même nom. Deux hits de la scène underground en sont extraits, "Nappy Heads" (Mona Lisa) et "Vocab", mais l'album n'a pas comblé les attentes des fans qui les avaient vu en concert. Bien que le premier album fut un échec relatif, "The Score" est devenu l'un des plus gros hits de 1996. Les Fugees étaient réputés pour leurs choix inhabituels de reprises et les sources de leurs samples sur les deux albums. The Score, par exemple, inclus des réinterprétations de "No Woman No Cry" (Bob Marley & the Wailers) et "Killing Me Softly (With His Song)" (Roberta Flack), qui fut leur plus gros succès pop. L'album inclut aussi une réinterprétation de "Ready or Not Here I Come (Can't Hide From Love)" des Delfonics dans leur tube "Ready or Not", qui utilisait un sample de Boadicea par Enya sans sa permission. Le procès qui suivit a débouché sur un arrangement grâce auquel Enya reçut reconnaissance et royalties pour son sample. Les Fugees ont toujours remercié et félicité Enya pour sa grande compréhension de la situation, par exemple dans le livret de l'album "The Score". Les Fugees ont gagné deux Grammy Awards en 1997 : "The Score" a gagné en tant que meilleur album rap, et "Killing Me Softly With His Song" en tant que meilleure performance vocale R&B par un groupe ou duo. Après 1997, les Fugees ont tous débuté des projets solo. Hill s'est mise au travail pour l'album très apprécié de la critique : The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Jean devint producteur pour de nombreux artistes (parmi lesquels Canibus, Destiny's Child et Carlos Santana) et a enregistré son album "The Carnival". Michel, avec Mya et Ol' Dirty Bastard, a enregistré le single "Ghetto Supastar" pour la bande son de Bulworth de et avec Warren Beatty et avec Halle Berry. Après que chaque membre ait eu du succès dans d'autres projets, les Fugees n'ont pas réussi à se reformer. Bien que les Fugees soient resté discrets à propos des raisons exactes, la plupart des fans pensent qu'un sérieux conflit de personnalité entre Hill et Jean a contribué à la séparation après "The Score".

Le rappeur emprisonné John Forté a aussi chanté avec les Fugees et Wyclef Jean, étant même le co-auteur et producteur sur deux titres de "The Score".
