Beijing’s mayor Guo Jinlong has resigned from his position, but not for the reason you might think.
Even as Beijing struggles to recover from the massive flooding that followed this weekend’s rain, Guo is being promoted to the highest-ranking municipal authority in China’s capital – Beijing Party Secretary.
It also practically guarantees entry into the Politburo Committee that controls the Chinese Communist Party, and by extension, all of China.
His resignation was scheduled as part of his political ascent, which happened to coincide with the disaster.
But some are grumbling regardless. Guo's promotion is underway as China analysts, and China’s netizens are leveling the blame for the flooding on city officials.
