The cosmopolitan city of Alexandria is considered an Islamist stronghold in Egypt, but there is also a significant proportion of Coptic Christians. The Copts voted overwhelmingly for the rival of new President Mohamed Morsi, candidate for the Muslim Brotherhood. They fear that Egypt will go in a direction opposite to the one they want: Salafists, who allied themselves with the Brotherhood during the presidential elections, are calling for Sharia law to be adopted throughout the country.
