Seven miners are dead after gas leaked while they were working in a mine in Hunan Province on Sunday.
The men suffocated just before seven in the morning at the Xiangzhong Coal Mine in the city of Lianyuan, the city government said in a press release. Thirty-nine miners managed to escape.
The gas leak was triggered from work the miners were doing underground, according to an initial investigation. It also showed that misconduct in the drilling work led to the seven deaths, according to Lianyuan Vice Mayor Liang Xiaobing.
The mine manager and the officer in charge of production safety fled after the news broke.
The Xiangzhong Coal Mine is a township mine with an annual production capacity of 60,000 tons.
