Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav announced a bizarre scheme in the UP assembly today (July 3), proposing that all MLAs be allowed to purchase a car worth upto Rs. 20 lakhs. This expense would come from their MLA funds, which would mean an expenditure of over Rs. 80 crores in a state that is asking the Centre for more funds. Even as the opposition tears into the proposal, the Samajwadi party has jumped to the defence of the Chief Minister. In a debate moderated by TIMES NOW's Anand Narasimhan and Sanket Upadhyay, panelists -- Nawab Kazim Ali Khan, Congress Leader; Dr. Tasleem Ahmed Rehmani, Leader, SP; Chandrabhan Prasad, Author and Social Activist; Sharat Pradhan, Senior Journalist; Siddharth Nath Singh, Leader, BJP and Shesh Narain Singh, Senior Journalist -- discuss the issue of what can justify this extravagance.
