Chimps maul American guide
Chimps frolic in a South African preserve.

While their playtime can be cute, the sanctuary was the scene of a violent attack.

The animals dragged American guide Andrew Oberle down Thursday as he stood close to their enclosure.

The University of Texas student lost several fingers.

"He was critical when he came in. He is doing obviously a lot better than when he came."

Animals at the Jane Gooddall Institute Chimpanzee Eden have been rescued from abuse in the illegal trading or entertainment industries.

The sanctuary director likened them to abused children, saying that sometimes they snap.
