Media, police scuffle during Hu event official
Reporters in Hong Kong covering Chinese President Hu Jintao scuffled with police Saturday.
During a visit to a construction site, a reporter from a liberal leaning newspaper can be heard shouting a question to Mr. Hu...... (nats).... who smiles and keeps walking.
The question was about the 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy advocates in Tiananmen Square.... and apparently, Hu's handlers didn't like it.
(SOUNDBITE) (Cantonese) APPLE DAILY REPORTER REX HON SAYING:
"Several policemen or security guards surrounded me. They wouldn't let me go. They took me from the press zone and trapped me in a corridor."
After hearing about the detention of one of their fellow journalists... the reporters turned on police. They surrounded the police sergeant and demanded an explanation. A scuffle broke out and the officer and several reporters were caught up in the scrum.
Hu is in Hong Kong for the swearing in of the city's new executive and to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the city's return to China.
