Syrian security forces have clamped down hard on some of the biggest demonstrations to date in the protests that have swept the country since March. Reuters says at least 49 people have been killed, and the casualty figures continue to mount. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in cities across the country, with killings reported in towns on the edges of the capital Damascus, in the central city of Homs, and in Izra'a in the south. Dozens more have been injured in the clashes. In Qamishli Arab, Christian and Kurdish protesters united under a banner calling for an end to corruption. Only a few hundred people marched in Damascus, but it was still one of the most important street protests seen in the capital until the security forces scattered it. Although President Bashar al-Assad has repealed the 48 year-old State of Emergency law, sworn in a new government, and promised reforms, this has not satisfied the opposition.
