Dr. David Samadi, leading prostate cancer surgeon, explains Hepatitis B as a serious liver condition affecting 2.2 million Americans today. Hepatitis B can lead to severe liver disease, cirrhosis of the liver, and jaundice. Ultimately, Hepatitis B can cause liver cancer, often with a very poor prognosis. A large number of those in the U.S. with Hepatitis B have come here from other countries and many may not know they are carriers. A simple blood test can identify Hepatitis B and parents are encouraged to vaccinate all infants against the disease. Adults who have not been vaccinated should opt for the 3-part vaccine, particularly if traveling overseas. Hepatitis B is spread through blood or bodily fluids during sexual activity, IV drug use, and unsanitary tattoos.
