LOOKING BACK: Erasmus student exchange program turns 25
Madrid, 15 June (EFE).- The European student exchange program Erasmus celebrates its 25 anniversary on Friday. Erasmus was set up in 1987 by the European Union with the idea of promoting a united Europe through student exchanges among universities in different member countries.
The project was named in honor of Dutch Renaissance humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam, a strong supporter of a Europe without borders.
The Erasmus university exchange program was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation 2004 in recognition of its contribution to the creation of European citizenship.
