Australia's 14 million voters have cast their ballots in what is becoming a cliffhanger parliamentary election.

The major parties are headed by two relatively untested leaders - Julia Gillard, the country's first woman prime minister, and Tony Abbott, a conservative challenger.

Early ballot counts have suggested a neck-and-neck race, raising the possibility of the first hung parliament in 70 years.

Al Jazeera's Dan Nolan reports.
