Thousands have been killed since the revolt against the rule of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad began in March of last year and there is no sign of the misery abating. Pillay also warned Syria is in danger of descending into a civil war that could destablise the entire region. And former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has expressed his frustrations regarding the conflict and President Assad's failure to implement his UN-brokered peace plan.
