Oil tanker blast kills hundreds in DR Congo

At least 220 people have been killed in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo after a fuel tanker overturned, unleashing an explosion that engulfed the village of Sange in south Kivu province.

The Red Cross says 36 women and 61 children were among the dead.

Many of the victims were at home or in cinemas watching the World Cup.

Some of those killed were reportedly syphoning off fuel illegally from the wreckage when it caught fire.

Al Jazeera's Alan Fisher reports.
