Sebastian Pinera, a successful businessman turned conservative politician, has been sworn into office as Chile's new president, replacing the left-leaning Michelle Bachelet.

He inherits the responsibility of reconstructing the country devastated by one of its biggest earthquakes in history.

Pinera was given a timely reminder of the task ahead as he was sworn in: moments before his inauguration, Chile was rattled by the largest aftershock since last month's earthquake.

Lucia Newman, Al Jazeera's Latin America editor, reports from Santiago, where Pinera has vowed to rebuild the country "stone by stone, brick by brick".
