Years of overdevelopment and major hurricanes have stripped large parts of Mexicos Caribbean coast of its sand.

In the tourist resort of Cancun, the government has embarked on a multi-million-dollar project to pump sand back onto the beaches.

Hotel owners hope the recovery project will bring tourists back, but environmental activists are giving warning it could cause a fresh ecological disaster.
