Maronites hope for a unified Cyprus

The village of Kormakitis in Turkish-held Northern Cyprus is home to a shrinking community of Maronite Christians.

Only about 100 people remain in the village, and residents say that if Cyprus remains divided, the tiny community could simply disappear.

They had hoped that Pope Benedict would address the issue of division during his three-day visit to the island, and that he would call for Turkish troops to pull out of other Maronite villages that have been turned into military bases.
