A set of triplets from New Zealand has died in the Qatar fire.

At least 19 foreign nationals, including 13 children, were killed in a fire that ripped through an upscale shopping mall.

New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key said the consulate will provide support to the family.

"The family obviously are dealing with, you know terrible grief that they have at this time. The consulate is coming over from Saudi Arabia in Riyadh to support the family. The grandparents who are here in New Zealand are going to Qatar this evening."

The two year old triplets are believed to have been in the childcare centre at the time of the blaze.

Other children who died in the fire were from Spain, Japan, the Philippines and Benin, among other countries.

It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze, which media reports said broke out at the childcare area at the Villagio Mall in Doha's west.
