The 28th edition of the Shell Eco-marathon is underway in Rotterdam. 200 teams from 24 countries – including 17 from the Netherlands - are taking part. The winner will be the team whose vehicle travels the farthest on one litre of fuel. The current record is 3688 kilometres, set by a Swiss team in 2005.
It’s the first time that the Eco-marathon is being held on public roads, which makes the competition even more challenging for the participants. There are tight curves so the drivers have to slow down and then accelerate, thereby using more fuel.
The first Shell Eco-marathon was staged in 1985. It’s the first time the event is being held in the Netherlands.
