STORY: Director Roman Polanski walked the red carpet in Cannes on Monday (May 21) joined by German actress Nastassja Kinski, who starred in Polanski's Oscar-nominated film, "Tess." The film was shown in Cannes' "Classics" section.

Cannes is a double feature for Polanski. The film maker is also the subject of American director Laurent Bouzereau's documentary, "A film memoir," which will be screened at this year's festival. "A film memoir" tells the story of Polanski's life, from his childhood in the Krakow ghetto, through his Oscar-winning movie "The Pianist" to the controversy of his arrest in 1977 and his life today with French wife, actress Emmanuelle Seigner.

Polanski's cinematic awards have often been overshadowed by his tumultuous life. He was arrested in Zurich in 2009 on a 1978 U.S. warrant for having sex with a 13-year-old girl.

After lengthy petitions by the United States to have Polanski extradited back to California, the Swiss government rejected the request due to legal technicalities in 2010.
