Azad Maidan was originally conceived by the Portuguese as the Largo Afonso de Albuquerque.At the Azad Maidan, there are two monuments one is where the mortal remains of Dr. Tristao de Braganza Cunha, the valiant hero of the Goa fight for freedom are preserved and the other is the one is the Memorial to the martyrs of the freedom struggle against Portuguese Colonial Rule in India.Edifice that has been converted into the police headquarters was the former Portuguese army barracks and Military Headquarters.
