STORY: Angry mourners fired shots in the air in the village of Al Bireh in northern Lebanon on Monday (May 21) at the funeral of Sunni cleric Ahmed Abdul Wahid and a companion who were shot on Sunday near a Lebanese army checkpoint.

The shooting death of the two heightened tensions in the region already simmering from clashes earlier in the week between Sunni and Alawite militants in the city of Tripoli against the backdrop of the crisis in Syria. The killings triggered angry protests in Sunni districts of northern cities and the capital Beirut where at least two people were killed in heavy fighting between rival Sunni Muslim gunmen in Beirut on Monday, medical and security sources said.
