Shops and businesses go on strike on Monday in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli to protest against the shooting dead of a Sunni cleric by Lebanese soldiers the day before amid rising sectarian tension and violence that is spilling over from neighbouring Syria.

The normally busy city centre stopped trading on Monday with residents showing anger at the killing of Sheikh Ahmed Abdul Wahid and Khaled Miraib, members of the March 14 alliance. Security sources said they were shot in their car as they sped through an army checkpoint without stopping. The army confirmed in a statement that the two men had been shot but gave no details.

At least two people were also killed in Beirut on Monday in clashes between rival Sunni Muslim gunmen.

The violence in Beirut's Tariq al-Jadideh district is some of the worst the country has faced since sectarian fighting four years ago brought Lebanon to the brink of civil war.
