Fans say farewell to Algerian Rose

Many gather round to mourn the songstress, some waiting for hours to pray and lay flowers in the Palace of Culture.

Fellow singer Chabba Yamina expressed her sadness at the loss.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) CHABBA YAMINA, ALGERIAN SINGER SAYING:

"We're so sorry for the loss of the icon of Arab music, the last lady of authentic songs, and we are so sad and I wish for all people and for all of Warda's fans to have patience."

Prominent officials including the prime minister also paid their respects.

Known as the "princess of Arabic music", the 72-year-old died of a heart attack in a Cairo hospital Thursday.

Warda spent most of her adult life in Egypt and acted in Egyptian films as well as performing classic Arabic pop music.

She was laid to rest in an Algiers cemetery.
