Chinese Defense Minister General Liang Guanglie and a team of top military officials toured the US Marine Corps base at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina on Wednesday. This is the first visit to the US by a Chinese defense minister in nine years.
Liang and his 24-member delegation arrived in a helicopter. US Marines welcomed them and took them for a tour of the base—showing and explaining their military equipment.
The Chinese officials stopped to examine armored vehicles, a tank, and guns.
On Monday, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the United States and China have sophisticated cyber warfare technology. But Liang denied China as the origin of cyber attacks aimed at the US.
Panetta said the two countries must work together to avoid bungles leading to conflicts.
Liang’s visit comes at a delicate time—as the US is in the midst of a diplomatic wrangle with Chinese authorities over the blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng.
The visit also concurs with the Chinese regime’s displeasure with the US’s stance over the Sino-Philippine naval standoff in the South China Sea.
