The Sudanese government says its forces have killed 40 rebels in clashes in northern Darfur.

The clashes come just two weeks before a referendum in Sudan which could see the country split in two.

And as the Sudan People's Liberation Movement prepares to rule a potential new state in the south, its members in the north are feeling under threat.

Al Jazeera's Mohamed Vall reports from Khartoum.
