In the opening address of the Sino-US annual Strategic and Economic Dialogue, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urges the Chinese regime to improve its human rights record and protect the rights of its citizens. Chinese leader Hu Jintao responds saying the two countries need to respect each other.

The US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged the Chinese regime Thursday to protect the rights of its citizens and to improve its human rights record.

Clinton said this at the opening of the US-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue in Beijing—just as the blind activist Chen Guangcheng said he wanted to leave China for the United States.

Clinton conveyed President Obama's comments that China would be stronger if it improves its human rights record.

[Hillary Clinton, US Secretary of State]:
"The United States raises the importance of human rights and fundamental freedoms. Because we believe that all governments do have to answer to citizens aspirations for dignity and the rule of law, and that no nation can or should deny those rights. As President Obama said this week, a China that protects the rights of all its citizens will be a stronger and more prosperous nation, and of course, a stronger partner on behalf of our common goals."

Chen was jailed for four years and put under house arrest for 19 months for exposing forced abortions under the Chinese regime's one-child policy.

Last week, Chen escaped from his home in China's Shandong Province and sought protection at the US Embassy in Beijing.

On Wednesday, Chen agreed to a diplomatic pact allowing him and his family to stay in China. Chen then left the embassy for medical treatment—escorted by the US Ambassador to China Gary Locke.

Now Chen wants to leave for the United States.
