Jack Pettis & His Pets – Spanish Dream, Victor 1928 (USA)

Jack PETTIS was born around 1891 in Illinois. Until recently, he has been one of the most enigmatic characters in jazz history. The facts have been established, that he married one of the sisters from the vocal group Keller Sisters & Lynch. He was self-taught on the C-melody saxophone as a teenager. He worked in Chicago with Elmer Schoebel and Paul Mares, becoming a member of New Orleans Rhythm Kings. In 1924, Pettis joined Ben Bernie's Orch. and in 1926 he started leading his own groups, also continuing recording with Bernie, the Whoopee Makers and Irving Mills' Hotsy Totsy Gang. Among Pettis' sidemen were Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang, Tommy Dorsey, Jack Teagarden, Benny Goodman. After 1930, Jack Pettis only made one more recording and by the 1940's he had completely disappeared, even his death went unnoticed.
