ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION

One World Trade Center, being built at the site of the fallen twin towers, surpassed the Empire State Building on Monday (April 30) as the tallest building in New York.

Construction started six years ago on the new World Trade Center and now the skyscraper, formerly called the Freedom Tower, surpasses the top floor of the Empire State Building, Port Authority officials told reporters.

One World Trade Center is built on the Ground Zero site of the fallen World Trade Center Towers, which were brought down on September 11, 2001 when militants loyal to Osama bin Laden attacked them with hijacked airlines, killing almost 3,000 people

The skyscraper will stand at 1,776 feet (541 meters) to the tip of its antenna when it is completed, possibly by late 2013.
