UN council authorizes up to 300 Syria truce monitors
  • 12 years ago
The UN Security Council voted unanimously on Saturday to send 300 unarmed military observers to Syria to monitor the ceasefire.

SOUNDBITE: Susan Rice, U.S. ambassador and acting UN Security Council president saying:

"The draft resolution has been adopted unanimously as resolution 2043 of 2012."

The 15-nation body says it is open to taking more steps if violence in Syria continues.

The vote came hours after a U.N. mission to Homs --- the frontline of fighting between President Bashar al Assad's forces and the opposition.

Activists say shelling and gunfire stopped for the first time in weeks before authorities let the monitors into the city.
