The space shuttle Discovery is preparing for its last mission.

Final preparations are underway at NASA's Kennedy Space Center on Monday (April 16) as the famous Discovery prepares for its final voyage: Not into space, but to be taken by piggyback on Tuesday (April 17) to an annex of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum outside Washington, D.C.

The oldest of NASA's retired shuttle fleets will be taken on top a Boeing 747 across the eastern coast of the United States and will swoop over the National Mall in Washington before becoming a permanent museum display.

The public will be able to get their first up-close look starting April 19th.
