Although written in mid-19th century, Melville’s novella is extremely topical in the context of the contemporary crisis of the capitalist world. The figure of Bartleby, a hard-working scrivener who repeats the same formula the whole time, was the subject of research of many authors and philosophers of the 20th century. So, in certain interpretations, Bartleby announces the subsequent all-encompassing spirit of the absurd or, say, he represents “the anti-hero of passive resistance”. A victim or a rebel, in relationship to his superiors Bartleby re-examines different types of relationships and truths, so the role of the superior who can become a father figure, an executioner, friend or victim changes as well.
