Egypt rallies against former regime presidential candidates

Egyptians out in force in Cairo's Tahrir Square.

They're here Friday to say no to the "feloul," remnants of the regime they toppled last year.

As the country gears up for a presidential election to replace ousted President Hosni Mubarak, many are angry that his vice president has joined the race.

Omar Suleiman the former intelligence chief who had a direct role in efforts to quell the January uprising, announced he would run for the top post last week.

Former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq is also making a presidential bid.

The Muslim Brotherhood and Salafis rallied demonstrators in the square Friday against what both Islamists and secular forces view as a threat to reform.

Egypt's new Islamist-dominated parliament also passed a bill that would ban those who served in top posts under Mubarak from political life for 10 years.

The ban would block both Shafiq and Suleiman from running in the May elections, but is unlikely to be approved by the ruling military council.
