Bo Xilai’s suspension from the Politburo and Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party has dealt a major blow to Jiang Zemin and Zhou Yongkang’s faction in the Party.

[Heng He, NTD Senior China Analyst]:
"Zhou Yongkang will automatically retire in November, after the Party’s National Congress, and his faction mostly needs someone with the 'blood debt' to carry out his faction’s interest of persecuting Falun Gong, and to prevent investigations of his crimes."

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has repeatedly hinted at the possibility of redressing atrocities committed by the CCP. Some analysts have interpreted such hints to mean the persecution of Falun Gong.

Bo Xilai was once expected to get a position on the next Politburo Standing Committee at the end of 2012. That would have given the Jiang's faction influence to block any redress and investigation.

[Heng He, NTD Senior China Analyst]:
"The most important legacy of Jiang Zemin is the persecution of Falun Gong, and Zhou Yongkang is the one to carry the policy out, becoming the faction of Jiang Zemin, and carry out this persecution policy. And they hope the next generation of leaders will carry the same policy, and this hope will totally depend on Bo Xilai to replace Zhou Yongkang as the head of the political judicial committee."

With Bo’s political career more than likely over, this leaves Zhou Yongkang exposed as the next possible target in the power struggle within the Party.

But Bo isn’t completely gone yet. The disgraced official remains under investigation for (quote) "serious discipline violations."

Our senior China Analyst, Heng He says the Jiang's faction will use this time to try and broker a deal with Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao as the try to protect higher leaders within their faction.
