Struggles over Solidarity - The Solidarity Pact | People

After German reunification, the Solidarity Pact gave the former east a financial boost. Thanks to the cash infusion, the coffers of many local authorities there are full. In western Germany, meanwhile, many municipalities are deeply in debt and struggling to maintain a crumbling infrastructure. They're now arguing that it's time to bring the solidarity package to an early end.
